RESEARCH & PROJECTS
ROLE OF HYDROTHERMAL IRON ON OCEAN PRODUCTIVITY, N2 FIXATION & EXPORT
The TONGA project
PIs: Sophie Bonnet & Cécile Guieu

TONGA is a multidisciplinary project dedicated to the study of the control of ocean productivity and carbon export driven by micronutrients from hydrothermal origin. It is based both on a 37-day oceanographic cruise in the Western Tropical South Pacific (R/V L’Atalante) and modelling work and involves hydrothermal geochemists, physical oceanographers, trace element chemists (ocean and atmosphere), biogeochemists, biologists and modelers.
N2 FIXATION & BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES ACROSS GRADIENTS
The OUTPACE project
PIs: Thierry Moutin & Sophie Bonnet

OUTPACE is a multidisciplinary project dedicated to the study of the interactions between planktonic organisms and the cycle of biogenic elements across trophic and N2 fixation gradients in the ocean. The OUTPACE oceanographic cruise (45 days) took place in the Western Tropical South Pacific, involving 65 scientists from France, Israel, Sweden and the USA.
FATE OF N2 FIXATION IN THE OCEAN
The VAHINE project
PI: Sophie Bonnet
VAHINE is a multidisciplinary project dedicated to the study of the fate of fixed nitrogen in the oceanic pelagic food web and its potential impact on carbon export. The VAHINE field campaign consisted in a large mesocosms experiment, which took place in the Western Tropical South Pacific (New Caledonia), involving 45 scientists from France, Israel, Germany and the USA.
